On April 13th, more than 70 children of a kindergarten in Jinan city, Shandong Province appeared vomiting simultaneously. Once the incident occurred, they are rushed to Shandong Provincial Hospital for treatment, but some children have been seriously dehydrated after vomiting 5-8 times...

The hospital staff did sampling test to the vomitus of the children and confirm that they are infected with Norovirus type 1 and type 2. The hospital immediately set up a special isolation area for treatment of the children.

1. What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is a kind of virus that causes nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis and is responsible for 60% to 80% of diarrhea. Both children and adults can be got infected. If infected with Norovirus, within 48 hours, there will be nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea and other symptoms appeared, and severe dehydration can be fatal.

2. Why are children infected with Norovirus?

Norovirus is mainly infected at intestines and can be spread by contaminated food, water, air and so on, that is, as long as eating contaminated food, drinking contaminated water, etc., a person will be highly susceptible to infection.

3. How to protect children from this terrible virus?

The first is to ensure food safety, followed by prevention and control of cross infection.
